What's That Sound I Hear?
2 min read
If you’re hearing a crackling sound in your ears, chances are it’s not the Rice Crispies! It may be the result of seasonal allergies, but it could be something worse. Several conditions can cause odd sounds in your ears including crackling, ringing, buzzing, rumbling, fluttering, popping, or clicking.
Clogged eustachian tubes – The eustachian tubes are tiny tubes that connect your ears and your sinuses. They help to keep the pressure equalized in your inner and middle ears. If you’ve suffering from a cold, allergies, or sinus infection, these tubes can get clogged, and the result may be a popping or crackling sound.
Middle Ear infections – Although this is usually a malady that strikes children, adults can sometimes develop inner ear infections. Fluid builds up in the eustachian tubes and gets infected, which causes ear pain, headaches, fever, or trouble hearing
Tinnitus – If you’re experiencing ringing or other noises in one or both of your ears, you may have tinnitus. The noise you hear when you have tinnitus isn't caused by an external sound, and other people usually can't hear it.
TMJ – Your temporomandibular joint is the connection between your jaw and the rest of your head. Problems here can cause stiffness or pain in your jaw, but can also produce strange noises. In this scenario, there’s nothing wrong with your ears.
Noises from hearing aids – If you’re wearing hearing aids, they may be the cause of the noises you’re hearing. This could be a result of poor fit, having the volume set too high, broken or hardened tubing, or dislodged microphones. If you suspect the hearing aid is causing these sounds, it’s best to check with your audiologist.

What Causes These Sounds?
Earwax buildup – The simplest reason for crackling noises in your ears is the buildup of earwax. This can occur naturally, but it can also come from using cotton swabs to clean your ears. The swabs can actually compress the earwax and shove it deeper into the ear canal.Clogged eustachian tubes – The eustachian tubes are tiny tubes that connect your ears and your sinuses.
