A scientific review of a large number of surveys shows that the use of hearing aids causes significant improvement in the quality of life of hearing impaired people. The results of all studies reviewed are remarkably consistent.

The review is published in the scientific report, “Evaluation of the Social and Economic Costs of Hearing Impairment”. The report presents the results of a comprehensive study of almost all scientific research on social and economic impacts of hearing loss in Europe, Australia and the United States.

Key points about the impact of the use of hearing aids on quality of life include:
  • Hearing aids improve overall quality of life for most users.
  • Hearing aid users enjoy better overall health than non-users.
  • Hearing aid users are perceived by their families to have better cognitive functioning than non-users and to be less introverted.
  • The most beneficial effects of hearing aids are found in the users’ social lives, taking part in group activities, and family relationships.
  • Hearing impaired people with hearing aids have greater self-confidence, stronger self-image and better communicative functioning, resulting in overall higher self-esteem, than those without aids.
  • Hearing aids help to reduce deterioration in psychological functioning as a result of hearing impairment.
  • Hearing aids can reverse social, emotional and communication dysfunctions caused by hearing impairment.
  • Hearing aid users are more likely than non-users to engage in activities involving other people.
  • Hearing aids improve most aspects of emotional life and hearing aid users have greater warmth and less negativity in personal relationships than non-users.
Yes! — Hearing aid technology has really advanced in the past decade. Hearing aids are now smaller than ever and provide benefit beyond their size. Visit an Elite Hearing Center near you for a Free consultation to sample and review some of the industry’s smallest invisible hearing aids.

Tinnitus FAQs

Have you ever heard a loud booming sound and then dealt with ringing in the ears afterward? It’s perfectly normal to have bouts of ringing in the ears every once in a while when the cause is clear. But sometimes, people experience unexplained ringing in the ears that doesn’t go away. This condition is called tinnitus, and treatment is possible. At Elite Hearing Centers, we strive to take care of many of your hearing-related issues with free hearing tests and reasonably-priced hearing aids. Our offices are located across the country, from Florida to Wisconsin. Learn more about tinnitus and how hearing aids can provide relief.
Tinnitus is a condition that causes a ringing noise in one or both ears without an apparent cause. Ringing in the ears is a very common problem in the United States, affecting nearly 20% of people. Anyone can develop tinnitus, but it is particularly prevalent in older adults.
Many patients ask us about tinnitus causes. Most of the time, this condition is caused by another issue, such as hearing loss or an ear injury. That means treating the underlying cause often improves tinnitus as well. We can conduct diagnostic tests to pinpoint the cause of your case of tinnitus. Those tests include:
  • Hearing exams
  • Imaging tests
  • Lab tests
  • Moving the eyes, neck, arms, and legs to check for worsened symptoms
Ringing in the ears is the most common symptom of tinnitus. However, some people report sounds beyond just ringing. You might hear these types of phantom noises as well:
  • Buzzing
  • Roaring
  • High-pitched squealing
  • Whooshing
  • Hissing
  • Rhythmic pulsing
  • Humming
There is no tinnitus cure, but treatment is available. Depending on the underlying cause of your condition, we might recommend a different treatment. Most of the time, tinnitus can be improved with the following treatments:
  • Changes to Medication: Some medicines can increase tinnitus symptoms. If this is the case for you, your doctor might suggest a replacement medication.
  • Earwax Removal: Oftentimes, relief is as easy as a professional earwax removal. Do not attempt to remove earwax on your own!
  • White Noise Machines: These machines produce static-like sounds that can help relieve ringing in the ears and help you sleep. Air conditioners, humidifiers, and fans can all create a similar effect.
If your condition is due to age-related or noise-induced hearing loss, hearing aids are likely the ideal solution. This tinnitus treatment can significantly improve your symptoms and overall hearing. Here are just a few ways that hearing aids can help:
  • Better Overall Hearing: Hearing aids don’t just fix tinnitus, but they also address wider issues with hearing loss.
  • Masking: Some hearing aid models do a great job of masking ringing in the ears with other sounds. They might play white noise or other soothing sounds, so tinnitus no longer bothers you.
  • Improve Perception: Ringing in the ears can make it difficult to participate in conversations or other sensory experiences. Hearing aids often help the wearer better process language.
  • Habituation: Hearing aids use a technique called habituation to, essentially, retrain the brain. This technique attempts to guide the brain in classifying ringing in the ears as unimportant, which in turn, makes them much easier to ignore.
Could hearing aids be the solution you’re looking for? Visit one of our offices in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Wisconsin for a free hearing examination. We’ll evaluate your condition and determine whether hearing aids are your best bet for tinnitus treatment. Our team will be at your side every step of the way, from the initial examination through hearing aid repairs later one. Give us a call today to schedule an appointment.

Comparing Types of Hearing Aids FAQs

There isn’t just one variety of hearing aid that will work for everyone. In fact, Elite Hearing Centers can fit patients with numerous hearing aid types until we find one that works for you. Our team will consult with you, learn more about your needs, and start trying out different varieties. Simply schedule a free consultation at one of our offices in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, or Wisconsin, and we’ll get to work helping you experience the sounds of the world around you.
Which type of hearing aid is right for me? This is the first question we get from new patients. The truth is, finding the ideal solution might take some time. There are many hearing aids on the market, and Elite Hearing Centers will work with you to find the one that best meets your needs. Here’s a brief overview of some common varieties.

Air Conduction Hearing Aids
Air conduction hearing aids move sound through the eardrum, middle ear, and finally, the inner ear. From there, the sound is sent to the brain and processed. Most hearing aids work this way.

Bone Conduction Hearing Aids
Patients who struggle with outer and middle ear problems might benefit more from bone conduction hearing aids. These devices transmit sound through the skull to the inner ear.

In the Ear Hearing Aids (ITE)
ITE hearing aids sit entirely inside the outer ear. As some of the biggest hearing aids available, they have more potential for features that wouldn’t fit on smaller models. They tend to have a longer battery life but need more frequent cleanings. We often recommend ITE hearing aids for patients with mild to severe hearing loss.

Behind the Ear Hearing Aids (BTE)
BTE hearing aids are placed over the top of the ear and sit behind the ear. A custom earpiece fits into the ear canal to conduct sound. BTE aids are typically the largest type of hearing aids, but some models can be well hidden. These devices can amplify sound more than other options, and some models might even have a rechargeable battery! BTE hearing aids are useful for patients with nearly any severity of hearing loss.

Completely in the Canal Hearing Aids (CIC)
CIC hearing aids fit nicely within the ear canal. These tiny hearing aids are barely visible, and hardly anyone will know you’re wearing them! However, CIC hearing aids have shorter battery life and are too small to support extra features. Those with mild to moderate hearing loss can benefit from this type.

Receiver in Canal Hearing Aids (RIC)
RIC hearing aids are made up of a speaker in the ear canal and a tiny wire that connects to a behind-the-ear component. These devices are similar to BTE aids but tend to be less visible. Some models might have manual controls and a rechargeable battery.

In the Canal Hearing Aids (ITC)
ITC hearing aids are created custom for each patient. They’re molded specifically to fit the unique shape of each ear. While they’re less visible than bigger hearing aids, they have less room for advanced features. We recommend ITC aids for mild to moderate hearing loss.

Open Fit
Open-fit hearing aids sit behind the ear and work to keep the ear canal very open. This allows more amplification of high-frequency sounds. These hearing aids are particularly useful for patients who have decent low-frequency hearing but have a hard time with high frequencies.
Technology is constantly advancing, even in the hearing aid space. New features become available on the market all the time. If you’d like to learn more about unique features, be sure to let Elite Hearing Centers know. We’ll explain some of the most popular additions, including:
  • Rechargeable batteries
  • Directional microphones
  • Wireless connection
  • Remote controls
  • Noise reduction
  • Synchronization
  • Preprogrammed settings
  • Direct audio input

Hearing Aid Fitting FAQs

So, you’ve been diagnosed with hearing loss. What are your next steps? If your audiologist has recommended hearing aids, be sure to schedule an appointment with Elite Hearing Centers. We offer free hearing aid fittings, and our team will make sure you leave with the best product possible within your budget. Simply give one of our offices in Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Wisconsin, and Georgia a call, and choose a time for your fitting. We’ll give you the details on what to expect.
Real ear measurement is the best practice for deciding a hearing aid’s level of amplification. This test helps hearing aid professionals pinpoint the frequency that will improve hearing the most. While not every audiology center performs these assessments, they’re widely known as the gold standard in precise hearing measurements.
Elite Hearing Centers is with you during every step of the fitting process. We want to make sure you’re prepared for your session, and we’re glad to answer any questions beforehand. Here’s a general guide for what to expect before, during, and after your appointment.

Choose the Right Device
Hearing aids come in a variety of sizes, and some have additional features. Before the fitting, you’ll choose the type of hearing aid that works best for you. With your audiologist, you’ll decide among more than five types of hearing aid.

Prepare for the Time Commitment
Most fittings take up to two hours. Be sure to carve out that time in your schedule. Afterward, you can get right back to your daily activities.

Identify the Ideal Amplification
During your appointment, your audiologist will conduct an assessment to determine just how much amplification you need to hear well. After all, we don’t want your hearing aids to produce no sound, but we don’t want them to overamplify sounds either!

Conduct Tests Within the Ear
Once the amplification measurements are complete, you’ll insert your hearing aid. An audiologist will play different levels of sound to verify whether you can hear them comfortably. Let the Elite Hearing Centers team know if you’re ever unsatisfied with the level of sound. We’re happy to adjust as needed!
